Way back in the day, Christmas 1980 a young nerdy Star Wars fan hears a little remembered song on the radio! The song “What Can You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)”, a fun little diddy that would become a top 40 Christmas hit. It was awesome to hear a Christmas song from the universe of one of my favorite movies.
The album was recorded by Meco Monardo (Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk) in 1980 and produced by the now-defunct RSO Records. It features recordings of Star Wars-themed Christmas songs and stories set in a droid factory with Antony Daniels as C-3PO providing narration and performing most of the singing. The presence of R2-D2 and Chewbacca was accomplished by sound effects.
Also, notable is that singing lead vocals on the song “R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” was the first professional recording of Jon Bon Jovi (credited as John Bongiovi) who was a janitor at the studio. His cousin Tony Bongiovi ran the recording studio where it was recorded.
