Some Kind of Wonderful: The Soundtrack

Some Kind of Wonderful is a 1987 American teen romantic drama film directed by Howard Deutch and starring Eric Stoltz, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Lea Thompson. It is one of several successful teen dramas written by John Hughes in the 1980s.
Unhappy with the ending of Pretty In Pink that was changed by the studio, John Hughes decided to write a retelling of Pretty In Pink titled Some Kind of Wonderful, but with the genders of the main characters reversed.
He also paid tribute to the Rolling Stones by naming the three main characters Keith, Watts, and Amanda Jones. This film also marked the end of John Hughes’ and Molly Ringwald’s working relationship because of her refusal to play the role of Watts.
Martha Coolidge was signed to direct, but Hughes being unhappy with Coolidge replaced her with Howard Deutch.
A truly great film and to me the quintessential 80s film which gave us an awesome soundtrack!
It featured various artists such as Pete Shelley, The March Violets, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Apartments, Lick the Tins, Blue Room, Flesh for Lulu, Stephen Duffy, and Furniture performing the haunting Brillant Mind! I hope to later do a post featuring each of these artists. But for this post, we’ll just listen to the soundtrack and enjoy the music.

Doug Stone

Doug Stone was born Douglas Jackson Brooks on June 19, 1956, in Marietta, Georgia. A singer of some of the most iconic country songs in our history. I’ve chosen to feature his Greatest Hits Volume album, but please check out his other work.

Relistening to the album, I was reminded just how much Doug Stone’s music spoke to me and the everyman. I was moved somewhat, or was it just the dust in my eyes!

Personal note: He is a super super nice guy just a normal person always accommodating to his fans. He used to shop in my store in Bremen when he was back home. Even helped he choose some ribs for a cookout and also gave him advice on making vegetable soup.

Christmas in the Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album

Way back in the day, Christmas 1980 a young nerdy Star Wars fan hears a little remembered song on the radio! The song “What Can You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)”, a fun little diddy that would become a top 40 Christmas hit. It was awesome to hear a Christmas song from the universe of one of my favorite movies.

The album was recorded by Meco Monardo (Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk) in 1980 and produced by the now-defunct RSO Records. It features recordings of Star Wars-themed Christmas songs and stories set in a droid factory with Antony Daniels as C-3PO providing narration and performing most of the singing. The presence of R2-D2 and Chewbacca was accomplished by sound effects.

Also, notable is that singing lead vocals on the song “R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” was the first professional recording of Jon Bon Jovi (credited as John Bongiovi) who was a janitor at the studio. His cousin Tony Bongiovi ran the recording studio where it was recorded.

I hope enjoy it!

Enjoy Life… Enjoy The Music…

…and Have A Very Mery Christmas and A Happy New Year to come!!!

Can’t Fight the Midnight

I’m gonna take a little different route for my first post. I going to feature an album that’s been on my mind lately.

That would be “Can’t Fight the Midnight” the 1989 debut and the only solo album by Jimmy Harnen, former lead singer of the band Synch.

This album meant a lot to me, at a time in my life that I was set up and accused of crimes (B&E, Forgery, Thief by taking) against my company, friends, and the one I loved.

I was found innocent after my framers confessed, but only after being picked up at work Mirandized, and taken to the back seat of a police cruiser. I never really regain the respect of my boss, subordinates, peers, or friends. I also lost my Southern Lady, who looked at me with doubt and fear now!

Anywho, after failed business, I found work in Calhoun where a friend gave me this album on cassette. It spoke to me, even seemed to mimic my trials and I played it until it dragged so bad!

(Note: Jimmy Harnen president of Republic Nashville)

So here it is I think a really great album and there should’ve been more!

Enjoy
